A long-reaching telephoto zoom characterized by a sophisticated optical design and advanced image stabilization technologies, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is part of the esteemed L-series developed for full-frame EOS DSLRs.
Long-Range Zoom
This Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II is a long-reaching telephoto zoom. The rotation-type zoom ring offers precise adjustment between zoom positions, especially when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring enables easy setting of the zoom tension for personalized control.
4-Stop Image Stabilization
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. It’s auto-tripod sensing, so you can just set it and leave it. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available—Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only—and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
USM Motor
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. It’s also worth noting that the minimum focus distance has been reduced to just 3.2 ft. with a magnification of 0.31x (down from 5.9 ft./0.20x on the original).
Optics
With 21 elements in 16 groups, one fluorite element and one Super UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) element have been incorporated into the lens' construction, and both help to reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to deliver notable clarity, image sharpness, and faithful color reproduction. Air Sphere coatings have been applied to the lens elements to reduce flaring and ghosting and proper light transmission is maintained even in super high contrast/strong lighting conditions. Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Build
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging. The redesigned hood now includes a side window for adjusting rotational filters like CPs and variable NDs, while the new rotating tripod ring has a removable foot that allows it to be detached from the lens without having to dismount the lens.
Movri Canada, providing the mail-delivery system, is set out to make the gear available at more affordable prices through online rentals.
Notes
-
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II is compatible with full frame sensor cameras, such as the Canon 5D Mark III, and can also be used with crop frame sensor cameras such as the Canon 7D Mark II. The focal length equivalent on crop frame sensors is 160-640mm.
-
This lens is compatible with 1.4X Canon extender. AF is not retained on most camera models and MF must be used on the lens. AF is confirmed to work well on the 7D Mark II and the Canon 5D Mark III when using the center AF point only. Results may vary, experiment at your own risk.
-
This lens is compatible with the 2X but you must consider that this will result in an f/11 maximum aperture on the lens and MF will be your only focusing option.
-
This lens does not have a push/pull design and instead features a typical rotation zoom ring. Zoom tension control is still maintained.
-
It is ideal for sports & wildlife photography, outdoor shooting, especially on subjects that are constantly changing distances.
