The Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Lens is a specialty tool for extreme close-up imagery. It renders subjects up to 5x life-size magnification with a minimum focusing distance of 9.4". It is strictly manual focus only.
Specialty Macro Lens
The Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Lens picks up where other macro lenses end and is essential for scientific imagery as well as creative macro applications. The Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro can magnify an object up to 5x, which would fill a 35mm frame with a grain of rice. This is a unique specialty lens best used by experienced macro shooters. It’s a good idea to use a focusing rail and macro flash with this lens. If you don’t have a macro flash we strongly recommend the MT-24EX flash.
How Macro Is It?
The MP-E’s resolving power is limited by the size of the pixels on your sensor at most aperture and focus distance combinations. Since typical pixels are 5-10 µm square and the MP-E can give up to 5x magnification, this means it’s capable of picking out features only a few micrometers across.
Optics
Dedicated solely to macro applications, this lens's unique design employs a floating elements system to maintain quality throughout the focusing range. One ultra-low dispersion (UD) element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions. Six-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality when using shallow depth of field.
Build
This 65mm f/2.8 is strictly manual focus operation only and features a removable rotating tripod collar for improved stability when working atop a tripod. Additionally, the front of the lens is designed to accept an optional Macro Ring Lite or Macro Twin Lite for greater, more even illumination of close-up subjects. Ring Lite and the lens has electric contacts for full-support of the E-TTL II flash system and for relaying accurate focus distance information.
Movri Canada, providing the mail-delivery system, is set out to make the gear available at more affordable prices through online rentals.
