The Canon EOS 80D Digital SLR Camera improves on the 70D. It is characterized by versatile imaging specs and further clarifies itself using a pair of robust focusing systems and an intuitive design.
24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
The 24.2MP APS-C crop-frame CMOS sensor produces high resolution still images, as well as high quality 1080p HD video. The DIGIC 6 Image Processor offers improved low-light performance with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-16000 that can be further expanded to ISO 25600 to support working in low-light situations. The sensor and processor combination avails fast performance throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 7 fps or record Full HD 1080p video at 60 fps in the MP4 format.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF System
Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system provides extremely quick, accurate, and smooth performance when shooting video in Live View. This is the first iteration of the Dual Pixel focus system that supports continuous focusing in live view still mode. On the video front, there is also a Movie Servo AF mode, which allows for easy and natural-looking rack focusing when changing subjects or distances within a shot. You also have the option to set tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and face tracking priority. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
45-Point All Cross-Type AF
Benefitting stills shooting with the optical viewfinder, a wide-area 45-point all cross-type phase-detection autofocus system provides really accurate, fast autofocus even in low-light situations. Making use of the 45-points is a series of four AF area selection modes, including single-point AF; Zone AF(nine zones to choose from); Large Zone AF(three even larger zones to choose from); and 45-point AF auto selection, which allows the camera to select a single point automatically. The cross-type design of the sensors offers accuracy in low-contrast and mixed lighting conditions, and the broad coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
The 80D supports 1080 Full HD 1080p video recording at up to 30 fps in the MOV format with ALL-I compression, or 60 fps in the MP4 format with IPB compression to increase quality. The 80D also features an HDR mode that captures two frames at different exposures to create video with what appears to be a much wider dynamic range. HDR effects are also available for stills shooting, and can be applied using Natural, Art Standard, Art Bold, Art Vivid, and Art Embossed settings.
Anti-Flicker Shooting
The Anti-flicker Shooting function compensates for flickering light sources to provide consistent exposure values and color during continuous shooting. This feature is useful for minimizing disparities in color and exposure, especially during continuous shooting in sub-optimal lighting situations. The maximum continuous shooting speed is 7 frames per second – fast enough for most sports and wildlife applications.
Touchscreen LCD & View Finder
The large 3.0" 1,040k-dot Clear View II touchscreen LCD monitor is great for shooting and image review. It features a vari-angle design to permit working from high and low angles and the touchscreen design facilitates intuitive control over menu navigation and touch-to-focus operation. The Intelligent Viewfinder offers 100% frame coverage for high compositional accuracy when shooting at eye-level. Additionally, further aiding shooting with the viewfinder, AF points and mode, compositional grids, a horizontal electronic level, and other assistive features can be displayed during use.
Other Notable Features
The 80D offers built-in wi-fi connectivity to both control the camera and review images from a compatible iOS/Android device with Canon’s EOS Remote app. It also features built-in HDR, multiple exposure modes for in-camera capturing and Creative Filters. A 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor benefits both autofocus and exposure metering precision and enables Color Tracking for more accurately detecting skin colors. There’s a wide variety of Auto and Special Scene modes for beginners, and in-camera RAW editing for those who are interested. The camera records its RAW/JPEG images and video files to SDHC/XC memory cards, and uses the same Canon LP-E6 battery as its predecessor with a rated output of 920 shots per charge (210 using live view).
Movri Canada, providing the mail-delivery system, is set out to make the gear available at more affordable prices through online rentals.
